about

Quiet Joys of Brotherhood

Words and music: Richard Fariña

For us, this song is about our growing disconnect from nature and a nostalgic wish to return to a more sustainable and perhaps even sacred relationship to land. Richard Fariña’s poem, set to an old Irish tune, was recorded by his wife Mimi on their 1968 album ‘Memories’, released two years after he died in a motorbike accident, aged 29. In his short life, Fariña was an important artist and an overtly political writer on the Greenwich Village folk scene, alongside his friends Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Sandy Denny also recorded a sublime version of this song on ‘Sandy’ (1972).
